Intro
You sleep seven hours and wake up tired. By 4 pm, you are reaching for a second chai. Your blood test came back clean, so there is nothing "wrong". Yet you don't feel like yourself. If this sounds familiar, you are far from alone. Fatigue is one of the most common complaints doctors hear, and for many people no single cause ever shows up on a report.
Researchers have spent years on the space between "sick" and "feeling great". Three threads keep coming up: how your body handles stress, how your cells make energy, and how much everyday wear your cells are dealing with.
Signs your body is running on reserve
-
Waking up unrefreshed, even after a full night
-
An energy crash in the afternoon that coffee only half fixes
-
Feeling "on edge" or restless when you finally sit down
-
Finding it harder to focus than you used to
None of these alone means anything is wrong. But together they are a useful nudge to look at stress, sleep, and nutrition before they pile up.

Ashwagandha and the stress hormone |
2026 · Randomised, placebo-controlled · 141 adults · 8 weeks |
Healthy adults aged 18 to 65 with moderate stress took an ashwagandha root extract or a placebo for eight weeks. The main measure was blood cortisol, the hormone that rises when you are under pressure. The researchers reported lower cortisol and better scores on standard stress and anxiety questionnaires in the ashwagandha groups, and described the extract as well tolerated. This adds to earlier Indian and Australian trials with similar findings. |

CoQ10 and everyday tiredness |
2022 · Meta-analysis · 13 trials · 1,126 people |
CoQ10 is a compound your cells use to turn food into energy. Pooling 13 placebo-controlled trials, researchers found that CoQ10 reduced fatigue scores compared with placebo. Longer use and higher daily doses were linked to bigger effects, and the authors concluded it was safe in the doses studied. |

Astaxanthin and oxidative stress |
2010 · Randomised, double-blind · 42 young women · 8 weeks |
Astaxanthin is the red-orange pigment found in algae and salmon. In healthy young women taking 2 or 8 mg a day, researchers measured lower levels of a marker of DNA oxidative damage and changes in several immune measures compared with placebo. |

Each study tested one ingredient, at one dose, in one group of people. That is how good research works, and it is why we read it carefully rather than loudly.
More research
A few more pieces fill in the picture. Spirulina, a protein-rich blue-green alga, was studied in adults over 50 for 12 weeks, with researchers reporting improvements in blood and immune markers and calling for larger trials [6]. And curcumin from turmeric is famously hard for the body to absorb. A small 1998 study found that adding piperine, the active compound in black pepper, raised curcumin levels in the blood of healthy volunteers [7].

|
Sleep |
Keep the same wake-up time every day, weekends included. Your body clock likes routine more than extra hours. |
|
Protein |
Include dal, paneer, eggs, curd or sprouts in each main meal. Most Indian diets fall short here. |
|
Movement |
A 20-minute walk after lunch helps the afternoon slump more than a third coffee. |
|
Daylight |
Ten minutes of morning sunlight helps set your sleep-wake cycle. |
